It was reported this week that PC Kelly Jones, of Norfolk Constabulary, has withdrawn her claim for damages after she was injured tripping over a kerb at a garage while she was on duty.

For those not familiar with this case, PC Jones had attended the garage in Thetford, Norfolk to investigate a break-in and was attempting to access the rear of the premises when she tripped over a kerb in a poorly lit area.

She began a claim for personal injuries against the owner of the garage because he had failed to make her reasonably safe as a visitor to the premises by lighting the area the kerb was in, or warning her of the presence of the kerb. As the result of the injuries she suffered, PC Jones needed to have 6 weeks off work and this was the primary reason for her undertaking the claim, so that she could recover her lost earnings.

Many people find themselves at a financial disadvantage after being injured as the result of an accident, whether it was as a visitor to premises, a road traffic accident, an accident at work or any other way that was not their fault. It is often the case that people do not receive any, or only limited, sickness pay from their employer while they are off work after an accident and this can often make life extremely difficult. It can also force people to go back to work too early because of the financial pressure they are under, which could ultimately also harm their recovery from the injury they suffered and cause them more problems in the future.
