UK Supreme Court Judges ruled this week that Scientology be accepted as a religion and for members to marry in its own church.

The Court has ruled that a Scientology Chapel in London is used as a place of meeting for religious worship and therefore it would be discriminatory and unjust if its Followers were not allowed to marry there using their own religious service.

This ruling overturns a reading of the law from a 1970 Court of Appeal case, Segerdal, which upheld the refusal to register the Church of Scientology chapel in East Grinstead as a place of meeting for religious worship.

The Government have said that the Judgement could fuel political rows now that the Church of Scientology could possibly avoid business rates. Brandon Lewis, the local Government Minister confirmed that he would be taking legal advice in relation to the ruling. He is concerned as to the implications for business rates.
