Nearly 3/4’s of private family cases involve one or both parties without legal representation the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England reports.

Only 57 “exceptional funding” grants were provided in the year since the Legal Aid cuts came into force rather than the 3,000 – 4,000 the Ministry of Justice had predicted.

Short term savings in Legal Aid are shifting costs to another part of the system because Judge’s direct that representation has to be funded.

The findings are published by the Office of the Children’s Commissioner in a Child Right’s Impact Assessment of change to Civil Legal Aid since April 2013.
