Female Genital Mutilation includes procedures that alter or injure female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
About 140 million girls and women worldwide are living with the consequences of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Dangers include severe bleeding, problems urinating, infections, infertility, complications in childbirth and increased risk of death for newborns.
Although FGM is illegal in the UK, so far there has only been 2 prosecutions. This is largely due to lack of awareness by professionals, cultural sensitivities, difficulty in requiring children to testify against their parents in court and because it is a hidden practice.
This is an extremely dangerous procedure for females to undertake and is now classed as child abuse. Are you at risk or know somebody who maybe at risk?
If found guilty of FGM you could be imprisoned, fined or both!
If you suspect that a child is at risk of FGM you should make a referral to children’s services straight away.
Please be alert and do not hesitate to speak to a professional today if you are aware of a female that may be at risk! For more information or advice contact the Ringrose Law team at one of our offices across Lincolnshire & Newark or call Jess on 01205 311511.
