A recent article in The Telegraph outlines new sentencing guidelines seeking to crack down on online abusers.

Under new sentencing guidelines people who turn to Facebook and other social media sites are likely to face prison sentences.  This is all part of a new policy which should treat domestic abuse offences more seriously and is a welcome example of the Law catching up with technology.

Online abuse can include behaviours such as monitoring social media profiles or emails, abuse over social media such as Facebook and Twitter and sharing intimate photos or videos without consent.

When a relationship deteriorates and the break up is not an amicable one some individuals choose to use any explicit images that they have of their ex-partner, often taken without their knowledge or consent and post them online as a means of revenge.

The feeling of hurt, loss of control and humiliation can be extrmeley damaging for the victim with longer lasting effects on future relationships.

There is also the effect on the victim’s carerr with the victim sometimes feeling they cannot carry on in their workplace when the abuse has gone public.
