Almost three quarters of stillbirths, neo-natal deaths and severe brain injuries could have had a different outcome with appropriate care in 2015 finds the Every Baby Counts report from the Royal College of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (RCOG).
The report identified that in 45% of cases best practices and guidelines were not followed. The reasons identified for this were ‘gaps in training, lack of recognition of problems, communication issues, heavy workload, staffing levels and local guidelines not being based on best available evidence.’ RCOG are now are now calling for a national center of excellence for maternity care in the UK.
