During the lockdown the Family Courts have been operating, albeit with overnight changes, which were very quickly implemented! This has meant that all urgent applications have been heard by the Court in the same timescale as they ordinarily would, ensuring access to justice.

Here at Ringrose Law we appear before a number of different Courts across the country, with the main contenders being Lincoln, Peterborough, Cambridge, Grimsby and Nottingham.

All Courts have been operating in similar terms and using platforms such as Microsoft Teams, BT Meet Me conferencing and Skype for business. These are all easily accessible by the public also but are secure which was the Court’s initial concern. These platforms have been approved and continue to be used even now.

Courts across the country are operating what are now known as “hybrid” hearings. These are where a select number of parties attend the Court in person, whether that is due to additional support needed or not having access to the software needed to properly participate in hearings where oral evidence is required. The Courts have adapted very quickly to this and are ensuring little or no delay wherever possible, but ensuring everyone’s safety at all times. There are also “hubs” which are remote locations such as Solicitor’s offices or Barrister’s chambers where remote hearings can take place.

CVP – what is it?

Ministers have confirmed that a new video platform is being rolled out to the family and civil courts known as Cloud Video Platform (CVP). It is already being used across 60 crown courts and 93 magistrates’ courts. The technology has been used in some 3,600 crown court hearings and more than 7,000 overnight remand cases heard by magistrates within criminal proceedings.

CVP can be accessed by any device that has a camera and a microphone – such as a mobile phone or tablet. HMCTS says that anyone can join easily, and securely, through a web browser, and sessions can be locked to make sure only appropriate parties join. Training rooms can also be set up so that sessions may be rehearsed before they go live.

Here at Ringrose Law, we are already working with the Peterborough Family Court who have already started operating CVP. It is working well with clients able to access it easily and able to test the system before the hearing actually starts, which is something none of the other platforms currently offer. We are supporting our clients with accessing the remote platforms which the Court are selecting We are receiving positive feedback regarding this.
