Self-made Wills

People may consider that completing a Wills Pack from a stationers such as WHSmith or a pack from a Union, means that they can forget about the Wills from the time they have signed them. This is not correct.

Self-made WillsI have seen many ‘self-made wills’ and these, I will be honest, cause us the most difficulties. Many of these Wills have not been completed in accordance with the instructions provided and many are not dated or signed appropriately. The repercussions to this mean that the application to obtain the grant of probate to enable the executors to administer the estate become more onerous and potentially increase the costs of the Solicitors acting.

In other words, take care and perhaps consider instructing Solicitors from the start so you get it right the first time. Wills are not as expensive as you think to have drafted by a professional. Our fees for example start for a single will at £125 plus vat. If the Will is incorrect the knock on costs of proving it at the Probate Registry are likely to be higher than this.
