About Lincoln, Lincolnshire

Lincoln is an ancient cathedral city and county town of Lincolnshire in the East Midlands of England. The city itself can be traced back an the Iron Age settlement centered around an inland deep water pool called Brayford Pool. However, the prominence of the settlement really grew as a result of the Roman invasion of Britain when they founded the fort of Lindum on the hill overlooking Brayford Pool. This fort was eventually converted to a colonia, or settlement, in 71 CE and given the name Lindum Colonia.

Due to Lincoln’s position as a crossroads for many different transport routes (the Fosse Way, River Trent and River Witham), the city became a major flourishing settlement for trade.

Following the Norman invasion and during the Medieval period, the city saw the construction of Lincoln Castle, the Bailgate area, the Bishops Palace and the world-wide renowned Lincoln Cathedral. At one point, Lincoln Cathedral became the tallest building in the world, being the first building to be taller than the Great Pyramids of Giza of Ancient Egypt.

The city was a centre of trade, commerce and a pilgrimage site during the middle ages which was a main source of income. Therefore, following the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century, the city’s main source of income was cut off and the city became to decline.

In the Industrial Revolution, the Lincoln’s fortunate began to pick back up. The city became a major engineering hub for agricultural machines and was home to companies such as Ruston’s, Clayton’s, Proctor’s and William Foster. The engineering specialism of Lincoln assisted greatly towards the invention of the tank during World War One where the first tanks were invested, designed and built in the city.

In modern times, the city has since further growth in the service sector, tourism sector and as a result of the two universities. The urban area of Lincoln, which includes the towns and villages of North Hykeham and Waddington, has a population of over 115,000 people.
