Although most see Christmas and New Year as a time for fun and celebration for some this is quite the opposite. Every year there is a spike in domestic abuse cases and reports to the police.
Christmas can bring with it added financial burden, an increase in alcohol consumption and family tensions. Domestic abuse is more likely to occur when perpetrators are off work meaning the families are all in the home together for a longer period of time, with little or no contact with extended family and friends.
Excessive alcohol consumption and mental health problems are regularly used as an excuse for violent and abusive behaviours which can be witnessed by children within the family during the Christmas holidays. Victims and Children have less opportunity to report abuse over this time. This is often a frightening and isolating time for the victim and children experiencing domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse is not always physical or evidential. Abuse can include emotional and psychological harm together with control and coercion. Sadly, some victims do not recognise they are in an abusive relationship at the time.
Protective orders can be sought through the Court by way of a Non Molestation Order which prevents the perpetrator from being close to the victim or contacting them via telephone, message or social media. Domestic abuse can be reported to the police or Children’s Services if there is a risk of harm to the children.
If you are a victim of abuse or you are concerned for the welfare of a person or a child it is important to note the signs and contact the police.
