There are many different types of abuse.

Domestic violence or abuse is ‘threatening, controlling, coercive behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, virtual, physical, verbal, sexual, financial or emotional) inflicted on anyone (irrespective of age, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or any form of disability) by a current or former intimate partner or family member’. It can include violence by a son, daughter, mother, father, husband, wife, life partner or any other person who has a close relationship with the victim.

Controlling behaviour tends to be at the very centre of domestic abuse. It is often that the abuser wants to control the victim, isolating them from support and depriving them from independence. This leads to the victim being entirely dependent on the abuser, creating a sense that the victim is unable to have any independence or do anything without the knowledge or help of the abuser.

Physical Abuse is the most known about form of abuse, this is any form intentional violence which is unwanted towards the victims body. This includes grabbing, pushing, pulling, hitting, throwing something at the victim, slapping, punching, biting strangling, kicking. Even forcing the victim to go somewhere they don’t want to go or stop them from leaving.

Sexual Abuse, this is also a type of physical abuse but in a sexual way, any kind of unwanted sexual touching, kissing is sexual abuse this includes rape or attempted rape, refusing to wear condoms or restricting access to birth control.

Emotional Abuse which includes all kinds of verbal abuse, aggression, intentionally embarrassing the victim in public. Threatening to commit suicide to keep the victim from breaking up with them or doing what they want the victim to do. Threatening to harm, the victim pets, or people the victim cares for, or threatening to take the victims children away.

Financial Abuse includes telling the victim what they can purchase, having control of their bank accounts, preventing them from going to work, restricting work hours, harassing the victim at work.

Digital Abuse includes posting about the victim on social media. ‘stalking’ the victim on social media, telling the victim who they can or cannot be friends with on social media.

These are just a few examples of domestic abuse, this list is not exhaustive and can show its self in many ways.
