From September 23, 2015 landlords, mostly at the commencement of every new tenancy must test preinstalled smoke alarms on every floor of their property and in the absence of that, they could face a penalty of up to £5,000.

The aim is preventing related deaths and injuries from fires, with approximately 3 injuries per day currently in England and Wales.
